War on alcohol: An experiment that was a ‘catastrophic failure’

Dr. Frank Gray of Scottdale used this Treasury Department prescription form to prescribe a pint of whiskey for medicinal purposes for Mrs. J.B. Gray of Scottdale on June 21, 1924. She was to purchase the whiskey from Broadway Drug Co., 14 S. Broadway St., Scottdale. A patient could buy only one pint of whiskey for medicinal use every 10 days.

The United States was a battleground before World War I — with armies of people opposed to liquor and saloons lobbying politicians and marching on Washington, D.C., in their mission to outlaw what they considered a scourge on nation’s morality — alcohol.
