Cokeville memories: Former residents, hikers revisit ghost of Derry Township village

Top: Cokeville historian and tour guide Dana Spiardi leads a group of about 50 on a hike Saturday through the former village of Cokeville. Many who participated in the 5-mile tour are descendants of residents who were forced to move out of their homes to make way for flood-control dams on the Conemaugh River near Blairsville. Above left: A hiker holds a detailed map of the village. Above right: Denise Jennings takes a photo of her father, Wayne, hugging a “witness tree” along the Conemaugh River. Wayne Jennings recalls visiting his grandparents, who were residents of Cokeville, as a child.

Ron Ross remembers the demise of Cokeville.
