West Nile, Jamestown Canyon viruses found in Westmoreland mosquitoes; Lyme risk high

This image depicts a close-up, left lateral view of a female, Aedes albopictus mosquito, which was in the process of inserting its needle-like proboscis through the skin surface of its human host, in order to obtain its sought-after blood meal. A. albopictus, also known as the Asian tiger mosquito, has been found to be a vector of West Nile virus.

Westmoreland Conservation District is urging residents to take precautions against tick and mosquito bites as samples of the pests collected in the county have tested positive for Lyme disease, West Nile virus and a less familiar new threat — Jamestown Canyon virus.
