The Westmoreland County Coroner’s Office is an investigative unit responsible for carrying out the statutory duties of the Coroner. The duties include investigation into the circumstances surrounding all deaths falling within the Coroner’s jurisdiction. The purpose of the investigation shall be to determine the cause, manner, time of death, and to determine whether there is sufficient reason for the Coroner to believe that any such death may have resulted from criminal acts, or criminal neglect of persons other than the deceased. Medicolegal death investigations are conducted county-wide on all unexpected, sudden, unexplained, violent, and suspicious deaths, including but not limited to, homicides, suicides, accidents, and natural deaths. Other duties include interviewing individuals involved in the death investigation, establishing the identity of the decedent, notification of the next of kin, safeguarding personal property, maintaining chain of evidence, collection and preservation of pathological and toxicological specimens, obtain and completion of mandatory records, coordinating activities with various agencies including law enforcement personnel, OSHA, FAA, NTSB, etc., input information into computerized databases, writing narratives/reports, obtaining documents, issuing certificates of death, serving subpoenas to obtain records to assist in the death investigations, arranging autopsies, radiographs, knowledge of medical terminology, photography of the decedent and scene, removal of the decedent(s), testifying in court, issuing press releases, completing statistical data, coordinating morgue operations, and verbal communication with multiple media outlets in regards to death investigations. Must be able to communicate efficiently with physicians, nurses, funeral directors, law enforcement, and emergency medical personnel. Must be able to communicate with surviving family members in a caring and compassionate manner.Minimum Qualifications:Associate Degree or Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Administration of Justice, Nursing, Funeral Service, Law Enforcement, Emergency Medicine, Mortuary Science, or any related field that will provide the education or knowledge relevant for the position, or minimum of five (5) years verifiable prior experience in a related field of medicolegal death investigation, EMS/medical field, funeral service, or law enforcement. Must successfully complete the Pennsylvania Coroners’ Basic Education Course and Examination within (1) year of employment with required continuing education yearly. Upon full-time employment, the successful candidate must successfully pass the registry examination with the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators as a Diplomate (D-ABMDI). Successful candidates are recommended, but not required to obtain Pennsylvania Act 235 Lethal Weapons Training.County residency must be established within 180 days and maintained throughout employment.
